Happy National Day! Meet Summer and Lisa.

Teaching English in Wuxi, China will go on a three day hiatus from October 1 to October 3 as HyLite School is closed for the Chinese National Holiday. But don't worry! You can still submit applications for teaching jobs to me at akaulins@gmail.com. I may not be at school but I have the Internet and home. I will gladly respond to all serious applications. You can look to the panel on the left for the link to the ad I have been circulating around the Internet.

In the meanwhile, you can admire the girls who work in our corporate clients office. They are Summer (with the camera) and Lisa (with the glasses).

I will still be posting on my other blogs here and there.

See you on October 4!

The students don't like talking about baking. They will talk about traffic.

Having done Speakers' Corners, I now have a wealth of resources I can use when I run out of ideas for what to talk about in them. But I do like to come up with fresh ideas to get the students talking. An idea I had last week which I tried last night was to talk about baking and using ovens. The students weren't interested. None of they had an oven in their homes. They may buy baked goods from shops but they don't think of baking as being a healthy way of eating.

So, I instead talked about traffic, making sure to give the students some choices because I asked the students about what kind of drivers and cyclists they were in traffic. Some admitted to being very aggressive.

Back to School.

I am back at school after spending some time in Nanjing, which is 70 minutes by train from Wuxi.

Nanjing is a nice city to visit, as is Shanghai. It is one of Wuxi's virtues that it is halfway between Nanjing and Shanghai, and so one can get the best of both cities without having to live in them. Nanjing is really too big, and its boring parts are too big and too far from its' interesting places. Day to Day life in Nanjing would be a bore.

The students ask: Why bail out AIG, but not Lehman Brothers?

I was teaching a business salon class where we naturally talked about the financial crisis in America. The students were interested in the topic and seemed fairly will informed about it. They told me that Lehman Brothers was not bailed out because the Chinese had shares in it, while AIG which was bailed out had no Chinese shareholders.

Are you telling me that it was an American plot against China? I asked. Possibly, the students answered.

Friday Night. Saturday

Friday Night I was able to have dinner with my Timken Company Class. We went to a local Brazilian buffet restaurant. The food was okay. It was good to see students making efforts to talk to the foreign Timken rep who attended the dinner.

Saturday at the School is always a good day. We do our classes quickly during the day. The day goes fast.

The best speech.

I judged a speaking contest this afternoon. The winner won because, in my opinion, he spoke clearly and used his own words to make the speech. The best English, I think, is the simplest English, without flourishes, that is honestly expressed with your own words.

The job is 5 days per week comprising 25 fifty-five minute classes and 15 hours prep. time with optional overtime classes. The trainer has 2 consecutive days off each week. The teaching materials are all supplied to which trainers add their own ideas to enhance the learning experience of both students and themselves.

At Hylite, you will teach a wide variety of class sizes from 1 to 50. The majority of classes you teach will be private classes (max. 4) and salon classes (max 8). We are teaching more and more corporate classes so those teachers with business experience are especially needed. As well, you will have the opportunity to teach an occasional primary and middle school class.

HyLite School is located in downtown Wuxi close to McDonalds, KFC , Starbucks and major shopping areas. The school has modern classrooms, a library full of foreign books, a mini-golf course, a table-tennis table and a snack bar selling drinks and snacks.

The foreign trainers come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, but they are qualified, experienced and dedicated to teaching. You will never feel like you are alone in a foreign country. Currently, we have 9 trainers from Australia, Canada, Ireland and England. The students are motivated adults (the youngest students are 15) and they will surprise you with their tenacity and eagerness to learn. Trainers are also expected to join in the fun of such off-campus events like, Hawaiian Beach Parties, Halloween extravaganza, day trips to visit local sights(Lake Taihu, The Ling Shan Bhudda-88 meters high!) and all kinds of parks and festivals that happen year round.

Most trainers now live less than a 5 minute walk from the school.

The city of Wuxi is s mall bustling city of 4.5 million people located in Jiangsu province about 70 minutes by train from Shanghai. There is excellent public transportation, the city is clean and on the whole it is a friendly and well-off community with many things to see and do. There are several large Western-owned super markets so if you like to cook you will find all the "home cookin" foodstuffs you need. There are Western restaurants and all kinds of different styles of Chinese restaurants such as Cantonese, Sechuan, Peking etc. A plate full of noodles with vegetables, very tasty, is about 7rmb.There are local Gyms to keep fit and other sports centers to play basketball, volleyball, table tennis and even a summer softball league.

We are looking for teachers who want to begin their ESL career as well as those who are enjoying the beginning of a 2nd career. Age isn't a factor, however, attitude certainly is. If you work and play well with others, enjoy the team approach to work, enjoy laughing and learning then this may be the place for you. We are a diverse group by age and nationality and welcome your interest in joining our school.

We hope to hear from you soon.

All applications should be submitted in MS Word, and the must contain COPIES OF:
1.a valid passport with photo
2.a TESOL, CELTA ETC. diploma
3.a minimum college diploma
4.a MAXIMUM 2 page resume

Speaking Contest tomorrow.

It will be my honour to be a judge at the Wuxi, China Timken Company Speaking Contest Friday Afternoon. With 13 students participating, I hope the best wins and the rest are all high-quality!

Late Start.

Today, I work 1300 to 2100. I have spent the morning on the Internet doing some blogging. I have also watched some television. A relaxing morning for me because I don't have the wife and child in the house, though I miss them terribly so.

The classes I have this afternoon should be interesting. I will talk about crime with some Advanced students who can best provide a Chinese perspective on such matters. And it is always good to see what crime anecdotes they have to tell me.

Having to recruit, I can't help but notice the presence that English First has on the Internet. I wish we had their presence. I believe we are a better school to work for and we do pay better.

The classes I taught today.

It was an easy enough day for me. I taught four classes: one in the afternoon and three in the evening. The afternoon class was a Speakers Corner where I talked about clothing with eight women. One professed shock at seeing someone where green pants and a red shirt. Two of my evening classes were about grammar which are easy enough to do with the already supplied lesson plans. Those classes were very small: one and four students. The other evening class was an Salon Class (Conversation class) with seven students, the topic being DVD pirating: not the most exciting topic but the students were talking.

We are still looking for teachers at our fine Wuxi, China school. Email me at akaulins@gmail.com for more details.

Things I learned in my speakers corner.

I had a speakers corner tonight. I decided to ask them about what they thought about the bad financial news from America. A few said they were concerned and worried because they had invested in stocks. After I explained the idea of bail-out, the students gave the non-committal answer that bailouts were necessary in special circumstances but not all the time.

I then asked the students about their keys. One girl had the key to her bedroom (in China, bedroom doors have locks on them) and the keys to her parents' room, but her parents did not have the key to her room, which was very strange I thought. Another student had two keys which she needed to open the front door of her apartment. Some students had no keys at all. Another had five keys for her electric bicyle (I have three).

I asked the students about the people I have seen who put their keys on a fob and then attach the fob to the back of their pants. The same student who would not let her parents have the keys to her room told me that her grandfather in the countryside hung his keys above his ass because it was the habit of people in the countryside to do so. Not a satisfactory answer but then the girl said that maybe the jingling of the keys made the likes of her grandfather feel secure. But as another person told me, they jingle just as well on the belt loop above your hip pocket. So the mystery was not solved.

Wuxi HyLite Field Trip #1

The fun you can have at HyLite!

Friday, September 12, 2008

I will say it again.

I will have to give a personal testimonial as to why I like working here, and why I think you would too. I have taught at HyLite for four years. Through hard work and some attrition, I have became Head Trainer. I have also married a local girl and we have the most handsome of sons. (see this blog or that blog for proof) So I have done alright. Others who have worked here have done the same. We now have two other trainers with local girls with wives who work here. They have made a commitment to Wuxi as well.

Wuxi is a big city by Canadian standards. I didn't think it was big but until I spent time in Shanghai (which is close to here - now one hour by train). While the big Shang has its' attractions, I prefer the slower but still fast pace of Wuxi.

The students here, with the odd exceptions are wonderful. Many students will go out of their way to do nice things for you. The staff are friendly and helpful as well. I have never worked with so many pretty girls before.

Read my other blogs and you will see more reasons why I love to teach in Wuxi, and you would too!

Here is the offer again....
